Firewalls
Firewalls are programs or systems that severely limit the network traffic that can reach a system or network. Firewalls are favored because they are easy to setup and they so completely shunt access to a network or system. This can be thought of as limiting the attack surface area of a system. Unfortunately, firewalls are viewed as a panacea by many people. While firewalls drastically reduce risk, they also tend to give people a false sense of security. Regardless of firewalling, exploits are found in exposed, unfirewalled applications. In other words, firewalls won't keep the attackers out. But, firewalls drastically reduce the number of attackers that will potentially threaten a system. If you connect to the Internet, you should have a firewall. if you connect directly without a network firewall, you should use OS-level firewalling features.
