Rootkits
|
| Rootkits are programs that are designed to hide themselves and other processes, data, and/or activity on a system. Rootkits can be used legitimately by programs that are trying to be tamper-proof, or they can be used by subversive software to penetrate and hack a system while remaining undetected. Rootkits are used extensively by malware and phishing programs. Rootkits are also used by DRM software. Rootkits are also used by companies to monitor their employees and control the propagation of intellectual property. Rootkits may also be used by governments and corporations to control classified information. Almost all rootkits extend or use operating-system level features. Because of this, many rootkits are implemented as device drivers.
